Republic of the Union of Myanmar
- Myanmar, pronounced MEE'-an-mar, is located in the western portion of mainland Southeast Asia. It shares a border with China, India, Laos, Bangladesh, and Thailand.
- In 1948 Myanmar gained independence from the United Kingdom and from 1962-2011 was ruled by a militant state.
- Since 2011, Myanmar has seen a dramatic democratic shift. In the Spring of 2016, Htin Kyam was sworn in as president and Aung San Suu Kyi was sworn in as State Counsellor, ushering in the first democratically elected government into office after decades of military rule and a new phase of peace and prosperity for Myanmar.
- Burmese is the official language.
- Buddhism is the dominant religion, with 89% of the population practicing Theravada Buddhism.
